Thyroid & Iodine

Dear Dr. Pam: I was recently diagnosed with hypothyroidism and told to start taking Synthroid, which I do not want to do. I read online that taking supplemental iodine can sometimes reverse hypothyroidism. Is this true and is there a particular product you recommend?

In rare instances, I will recommend supplemental iodine, but in most cases taking more iodine will worsen hypothyroidism. Iodine deficiency is seldom the cause of this condition. While it is true that iodine deficiency can cause goiters, few people experience iodine deficiency in the U.S. today. In fact, most people consume too much of it.

The thyroid requires 150 mcg per day, but most Americans are consuming between 300 and 700 mcg per day, much of this in the form of iodized salt, which is not only found in processed foods, but abundantly used in cooking and seasoning.

Sea salt (not iodized) is a better alternative. Trace amounts of iodine, enough to meet daily needs, are found in vegetables.

Normalizing iodine intake alone will not always reverse hypothyroidism, because there are other factors that contribute to it. One of the most common is high estrogen levels since estrogen can interfere with thyroid function. This is one of the reasons why thyroid disorders are more common in women than in men. Dietary changes (eliminating dairy, very little animal food, lowering fat intake to less than 15% of daily calories, increasing fiber) and achieving and maintaining optimal weight and body composition will reduce estrogen levels, and this often helps restore thyroid function.

Note from Emily - Kelp can be used to balance thyroid and here is a test you can do on yourself to see how your thyroid is doing.

Dr. Broda Barnes, MD, was a medical endocrinologist who felt that the serum thyroid tests are not reliable indicators of thyroid function. He used a 6 day average of one’s basal temperature to determine the thyroids ability to regulate the body’s metabolism.

1.   Put an oral thermometer at your bedside so you don’t have to get out of bed.

2.   When you first wake up, BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING, place the thermometer in your bare armpit.

3.   When digital thermometer signals, or after 5 minutes of a mercury thermometer, write down your temperature.

4.   After six days, add the total and divide by six. The ideal temperature is 97.8 -  98.4

A consistently lower average is an indication of decreased thyroid function.

Celebrating Changes

from an article in the American Holistic Health Assn. Newsletter,
by Barry Alan Sultanoff, MD

Breaths come and go. Tens of thousands of times every day, your breath changes its direction. The events of your life come and go, too. Nothing stays constant. Everything is changing.

The attitude that you choose to take toward this ever-changing nature of your life---how well you learn to let go of what was and move on with what is --- has a huge impact on your health and well-being. It is a significant determinant of how long, and how well, you live.

Here's the choice you have: You can be frustrated by what you believe has been lost, and feel pained and sad about what went wrong. Or you can celebrate the gift of perpetual renewal, every breath of your life.

Imagine that, as you journey through life, you're carrying a wide-mouthed cup into which life's experiences pour.....the "good" and the "bad".  Whatever you collect in your cup, you savor it---as it drops in for a moment---but you do not save it, because your cup has no bottom!  Like a thoughtful house guest, it only visits for a short while. It doesn't take up residence.

Here's a way to engage this healthy practice of letting go, by harmonizing with the rhythm of your breath:

Choose something that you've had a hard time letting go of---an old resentment or sorrow, a self-judgment or judgment of another---and make a choice to be free of it.

Focus on your breathing, noticing the gentle ebb and flow of life-giving oxygen, in and out of your lungs. Every day you have tens of thousands of opportunities to let this ever-changing quality of the breath teach you how to let go---as it instructs you in how to go with the flow and move on to whatever's next.

Ask this wise teacher to assist you now in helping you let go of something that you no longer have to carry.

Now, let your cup be bottomless. Each time you breathe in, celebrate the feeling of clean, fresh air entering your body. And each time you breathe out, feel whatever it is that you no longer want. It's time to move into the present. By celebrating change as an inevitable and delicious part of life, you will always have enough. Every moment will bring some new delight.

What a strange paradox:

            By emptying yourself
of what you do not need
to hold onto…

your bottomless cup
will always be full.

Wheat Sensitivity

Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease triggered by the ingestion of gluten, which damages the intestinal lining and interferes with the normal absorption of nutrients, causing malnutrition.  Gluten is found in wheat, rye and barley.   If you feel you have a gluten sensitivity, eliminate wheat for a few weeks and see if your symptoms go away.  You may just have a sensitivity because most processed foods contain wheat and we all have too much in our blood. Here are some possible symptoms: Weight loss or gain, Nutritional deficiencies, Low iron, GI problems (bloating, pain, gas, constipation, diarrhea), Aching joints, Depression, Eczema, Head aches, Exhaustion, Irritability.

Here is what one of many people have said who had Celiac Disease or wheat intolerance.

After stopping all the medications the doctors had me on and only taking the fruit and vegetable capsules, the results were nothing short of a miracle for me.  After being on Juice Plus+ for 3 days, for the first time in eight years I assimilated my food correctly.  After six years of Juice Plus+ I am now symptom free from disease.  What power there is in seventeen different raw fruits, vegetable, and grains and the difference it can make in your health. It gave my system the assistance it needed to heal itself.
